Protecting Plant-Life Around Your Home During An Exterior Paint Job

Having the exterior of your home painted is necessary from time to time. Unfortunately, such a big job can be hard on the plant-life around your home. If you have flowers, shrubs, and trees around your home and are planning an exterior paint job, you must protect them as the work is completed. Here, you'll learn a few tips to help you keep your plants looking great while you make your home look better.

Protect Small Plants

The small plants are probably at the most risk of getting damaged during this project. Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping that they aren't damaged, you can cover each plant with buckets, bins or boxes. Simply turn the boxes, bins or buckets upside-down to cover the plants. Not only will covering the plants protect them from being trampled, but it will also help to protect them from the paint splatters that will fall to the ground while the work is completed.

Medium to Large Bushes

You're not going to be able to cover the bigger plants and bushes with buckets or boxes, but you can purchase some tarps, use old sheets or shower curtains to cover them. Once you cover the bushes and plants, place some heavy rocks at the bottom of the material that you're covering them with. The rocks will keep the covering from blowing off with the wind or shifting if they are brushed up against.

Trees

Trees can be hard to handle, but if you can keep a majority of the branches and leaves away from the home, they'll be less likely to get covered in paint or scrape against the fresh paint. To protect the trees, head to your local home improvement store and look for the heavy-duty plastic wrap. This wrap is used to cover carpeting in new construction, as well as wrapping pallets of products to keep everything from falling over. Use that plastic wrap to wrap the tree. Start at the bottom and gently push the branches upwards as you wind the wrap around the tree.

Hiring a professional painting crew to paint the exterior of your home is a good choice as they have the experience to get the job done right while protecting the property that they're working on. If you're concerned about the plant-life around your home getting damaged, be sure to specify your concern with the crew prior to them getting started.
