Painting Contractor Tips for a Professional Paint Job Every Time

If you are going to tackle the job of painting your business office yourself, then you must follow these tips to achieve a professional paint job:

Use Joint Compound to Fill Holes and Fix Cracks

Before you even think of painting your walls, you first need to prepare their surfaces to accept the paint. While it is tempting to save time and skip the preparation stage, taking the time to prep the walls before you paint will result in a much more professional paint job in the end.

Using a putty knife, apply joint compound to any areas of the walls where there are holes or cracks. You should fill in the damaged areas completely and then use the putty knife's edge to remove any excess joint compound.

Once the joint compound has dried, then you should use a palm sander or sanding block to sand down all of the spackle so that it is smooth and will not be seen after you paint the wall.

Use Primer to Avoid Flashing

Since joint compound is a porous substance, it has a tendency to absorb paint. When the paint is absorbed into the joint compound it leaves an area of the new paint job that appears to be more matte in finish than the rest of the wall is. This damage is called flashing, and it can be prevented by applying a coat of primer before painting your walls. Just as providing a smooth and damage-free surface to apply the new paint is important to the final result, so too is using a quality primer. Though applying primer is an added cost and effort, preventing flashing will make your final result look much more professional.

Use a Professional-Grade Paint Extender

Finally, to give the paint extra time to dry, you should add a professional-grade paint extender to all of the paint you use in your office. Paint extenders help the paint to self-level and remove any roller or brush marks on the final surface of the paint. By adding a paint extending product into your paint, your newly painted walls will have a much smoother and more professional finish. Paint extenders can be used with all types of paint and on drywall as well as trim.

If you find that you'd rather have the paint job done professionally, contact a commercial painting contractor to set up an appointment. Then, enjoy your freshly painted office.
